Often, these panels sort of play with the urbane yet uptight bearing of a certain type of bourgeois New Yorker. “Christ, what an asshole!” I love how this one subverts the tone of your typical New Yorker cartoon. I know explaining these lines gets into territory painfully close to one of those Saturday Night Live prime-time specials where Lorne Michaels explains why each skit is funny, thus rendering it entirely unfunny, but still: What I appreciate about the four previously-recognized universal captions is that each works in a slightly different way. Better yet, consider the conversational usage of “guy” to signify any living or inanimate being in existence. Please consider “guy” in this case to be a gender neutral term. For the record, I’ve been testing “Almost positive you’re in the wrong panel, my guy” for two years. Old news to my Insta followers, some of whom demand I compile all of my submissions ( which I’ll do, sooner rather than later which I did in November 2021 - I’ll continue updating the collection over time). I’ve been submitting to the caption contest on and off since 2016, and in 2019 I unlocked a fifth universal New Yorker caption: “Almost positive you’re in the wrong panel, my guy.” What are you gonna do, argue that any of these can’t serve the purpose every New Yorker caption is supposed to serve? Popular sentiment is right. Cory Arcangel unlocked “ What a misunderstanding!” in 2011, and Frank Chimero has unlocked two: “ Everyone was apparently very bored at work that day” (2015) and “ Hi, I’d like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn” (2016). Up to now-ish, we as a society have also accepted four New Yorker captions as “universal.” The first was unlocked by Chris Lavoie, back in 2006: “ Christ, what an asshole!” The pace of discovery really ramped up within the last decade. I’d be willing to wager the dream of discovering a new universal New Yorker caption is kicking around somewhere in the brain-pan of anyone who frequently submits to the magazine’s weekly Caption Contest. As a society, we’ve accepted there is such a thing as a universal New Yorker cartoon caption - a gag line that can work with any New Yorker cartoon.

Reading it at any point from the first chapter to the last evokes an unsettling feeling. Having said all that, there's a lot more to praise about the manga than to criticise with it. The incident that sticks out to me as being the funniest is the snail chapter- although the snails become relevant again later in the novel and are used more effectively- I wonder if it would've been better to remove the snail chapter entirely and introduce the snails when they appear later in the manga. One last piece of negative criticism - sometimes I was taken out of the story by certain chapters within it in which the absurd bordered on the comical. Like Lovecraft, Ito seems less interested in the individual as an entity, and more on the implications of cosmicism, which negates not just humanity as a whole but especially the idea of the individual. As a fan of Lovecraft, I didn't expect much from the characterisation, and I knew that the focus of the manga would be more on the cosmic horror at the heart of the story. However, my issues with the characters are minor. I suppose it's easy to deflect this criticism with Shuichi's motto of 'they were contaminated by the spiral'. In fact, the only time we get the sense that anyone is disturbed enough by the happenings in the town to get out is just before the climax of the novel. For instance, she has several opportunities to leave the town with her boyfriend but doesn't - even after a string of spiral-related deaths throughout this sleepy coastal town. The main character also has a severe case of 'Horror-protagonist-itus' and does things which normal people wouldn't do. Also the primary cast of characters that permeate the majority of the novel have little substance to them, and pretty much no character development. After a certain point, it just feels pointless to introduce a new character, since anyone with half a brain knows that that character will be dead by the end of the chapter. My biggest gripe with the characters is that, from my recollection, only two, both minor, are introduced after the first couple chapters that don't die by the end of the chapter. While I'm on this topic, let's talk about the characters. I guess that format is somewhat inevitable when reading a serialised manga. Like, I get it, the town is cursed by the spiral. Admittedly, it does eventually pick up, but when it finally did, I was beginning to lose interest. I think the reason I finished the manga so quickly was partially due to me wanting to keep reading so I could get to a point where the plot actually advances. And the episodes aren't in themselves badly done, and they fulfil their purpose of increasing the reader's feeling that this town is bad news (a feeling we get in the very first chapter), but at a certain point it feels repetitive. It's basically just a series of episodes of weird shit relating to spirals. For the first half of the book, the plot more-or-less doesn't progress. And the manga does little to subvert the expectations you would have from knowing that (though I don't really blame it for doing that). When reading this, I didn't really have an idea about what to expect outside of 'Lovecraftian horror involving spirals'. Unlike the visual element, I do have a couple issues with it, however. And that's without talking about the actual body horror that Ito uses, which, drawn in this art-style, is some of the best depictions of visual horror I've ever seen. It has the same 'familiar-but-something-not-quite-right' vibe as Uncanny Valley animation. The result is this unsettling feeling, even when nothing creepy is happening. Junji Ito's art style is acutely distinct instead of the traditional pristine, big-eyed manga/anime characters you expect, Uzumaki's characters are drawn with a degree of realism you don't usually see in anime/manga. Uzumaki would be nowhere near the quality it is if it were in prose or some other medium- comic book is the perfect form for this story. In my opinion, this is the jewel in the crown for this manga. Being both a weeb and a Lovecraft fan, people irl and online have been constantly telling me to read it.įirstly, the art. I've probably been familiar with Ito's works for years now, and I owned Uzumaki for over a year before I actually read it in the past couple days. Last night I finished the three-volume Manga series Uzumaki by Junji Ito. The decoration making was a piece of wood with felt pens and some dried up paint if you could find some. (keep in mind, your local mall has a better train ride) There were a few 5 minute shows that you had to race to fit in and find at the right time slot. We never got to ride the train as the line was always to long. Regarding the event, it was sloppy, disorganized, and underwhelming. We paid full price for the tickets (Memory Maker Pass $49.95 x 2) 4 adult tickets ($20 each) I learned after booking well in advance that Groupon started offering 50% off tickets after I had already paid full price for ours. 2 adults, 2 x 7 yr olds and 2 grandparents. We went on a Saturday evening in December. I was very disappointed with Peppermint Park at the Anatole. The Anatole had about 10 tacky conventions. The Gaylord is decorated so beautifully, with lights and fabulous picture opportunities. The Gaylord makes the Anatole look like amateur hour. We had tickets to the drop in gingerbread decorating and tickets to Cookies with Mrs Clause in a dedicated time slot. We went to the Gaylord Texas on the Thursday early evening after school a couple of days before. We had so much other stuff planned that we missed a lot of the activities but it was still fun staying at such a Christmasy hotel.I was very disappointed with Peppermint Park at the Anatole. If you want to do all of it, I would recommend planning a trip and just doing the activities at the hotel. The Hilton Anatole has so much to do for Christmas. I even took a picture of the sign so that I could check the show times but I forgot about it until our last day when we were checking out. The show was supposed to be Winter Wonderland. That was the puppet show put on by Geppetto’s Marionette Theater. There was one other activity that I wanted to do but we never got around to doing. This is another thing that we didn’t do, but we saw the setup and really liked it. The Anatole also has Breakfast with Santa. If you’re looking for Christmas themed food we did find some Christmasy desserts. There were also blankets and pillows available. The movie that was showing was The Polar Express and the hotel provided popcorn and lemonade. The movie night was nice there were not many families there when we went. After the boys took their picture with Santa we went to go get something to eat and then the boys wanted to go to the movie night. I would have taken more pictures but I figured we were going to go back and we never were able to. Peppermint Park was open from 5pm-9pm and there were games to play, shows, and a train ride. We did go outside to check it out and the boys took a picture with Santa but that was all we were able to do at that time. We spent 3 nights at the hotel and were hoping to do Peppermint Park the first night but we didn’t have time. Peppermint Park is one of those offerings. There are also several Christmas activities available as well. The Anatole isn’t just decorated for Christmas. This is a mini train display but it wasn’t running when we were looking at it. Even some of the art gets a Christmas touch! During Christmas you’ll also find holiday decorations and several Christmas trees throughout the hotel. The property is large, beautiful, and filled with art. The Hilton Anatole is one of my favorite hotels and just happens to be one of the best hotels for a Christmas vacation. Supporting audio output means that you can connect headphones or external speakers directly to your monitor. If it does, then there may be a totally different issue.īut before we look into the next possible cause, it's worth noting that if the manual states that the monitor supports audio output, it may mean something other than integrated speaker functionalities. How Do Ghostwriters Work: Everything You Need To Know About The Ghostwriting Process (Music) Now, with the idea that the show might jump ahead five years, she's already thinking of what she wants to explore with her character in Season 3. While there are plenty of others that the story revolves around, Rue is the narrator and who we mainly follow. Zendaya’s character, Rue, is the main character of Euphoria. Zendaya Hopes That Season 3 Explores The Character’s Lives Post-Graduation This would honestly line up with the actual ages of the actors who play these teenagers in high school, so I’d be totally down for that. It’ll be something new for the audience to discover. Who can say? But knowing Sam’s brain, it’s gonna be exciting, and he will challenge all of us, because he won't want to repeat himself. There is talk of it being approximately five years in the future, and that they’re not in high school anymore. I’ll do everything I can to make the third season of the show successful. In an interview with Vogue that one of the costume designers, Heidi Bivens, gave, she confirmed that she will do her best to make the outfits for the third season just as great, hinting that there have been talks of a “five-year” time jump: While not much is known about the upcoming third season, there is a hint of how far Euphoria might jump into the future – and it could be substantial. Euphoria Season 3 Could Take Place Five Years In The Future It’ll be sad to see her go, but I wish Ferreira the best of luck in the future with all her new projects. I don’t want to play that and I think they didn’t want that either. I really wanted to be able to not be the fat best friend. I don’t know if it was gonna do her justice. I just don’t think it would have fit into the show. I mean, I think that there were places you could go. I don’t think there was a place for her to go. Later on, however, Ferreria revealed in an interview with Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, that the real reason she left the series was because she felt that there was “nowhere” for Kat to go next in the season: I put all my care and love into her and I hope you guys could feel it. I hope many of you could see yourself in her like I did, and that she brought you joy to see her journey into the character she is today. According to her Instagram story (via The Hollywood Reporter) the actress decided to leave the show, saying that she hoped fans could see “themselves” in the character like she did: Unfortunately, one of the cast members that we will not be seeing in Season 3 of Euphoria is Barbie Ferreira as Kat. Of course there were some good, but over all the over all feeling at this outlet is that you are disturbing them. We were there on a major shopping trip and made a lot of purchases that day, from many unfriendly people. We found most of the store personnel to be unfriendly, and not helpful. They have a cute train ride would be great fun for the kids. I believe this outlet has had difficult times with the economy. The outlet has several stores including American Eagle, Bath and Body, Kitchen collection, Several shoe stores. It is right next to 71 so there is easy access. There is not much outside the location except a few fast food places. There is only a few fast food food places you find elsewhere. It is an outdoor plaza mall so keep that in mind for the weather.Įating choices are limited. All you are seeing is a ride around the shops basically advertising the stores. Unless you have small children skip the train. Many of the stores offer a discount if you get a savings card which is free. What you need to do is get a flyer from the customer service counter near the food court. The prices you see are what it sells for for the outlet store. You can find good prices but not everything is a bargain. They also give item to charity that can't be sold anymore but still can be used.Īnother thing here don't expect a large amount of staff in the stores. A store in a mall will rather reduces the prices their old stock rather than shipping it to a outlet store. People don't seem to realize what it takes to move merchandise around and the expense. You will not always find the same selections you get in the main stores and department stores. You are not finding merchandise from a mall store being sent here. The merchandise you find here is made for and priced for this type of location. The thing to keep in mind here these are outlet stores. It is a shame that about a third of the retail spaces here are empty. IF the employees were nice this would have been a perfect day, as we really were able to find everything we needed.A good place for shopping but it is a bit out of the way. We bought 2 pair of shoes, 3 pair of pants, 5 shirts, and lots of undergarments. We purchased from Van Heusen, Tommy Hilfiger, Jockey, Rack Room Shoe, and the candy store which had great cookies. We were there on a Monday, it was very slow there at the time, the reason we picked this day, as we needed lots of clothing. We were in all the shoe stores and they were all the same. The blonde lady(one that greeted us) was nice at check out. However, the dark hair lady on floor was put out the entire time we were there, unfriendly, irritated that she had to put shoes back on rack or that we did not do it right. We needed a pair of running shoes and casual shoes, our bill 98 dollars for both. At Rack Room Shoes we purchased two pair of shoes, First time we entered no one greeted us. It is an outdoor plaza mall so keep that in mind for the weather. Another thing here don't expect a large amount of staff in the stores. They also give item to charity that can't be sold anymore but still can be used. A good place for shopping but it is a bit out of the way.

Our American launch was a matter of survival. When you don’t have any resources, you’ve got but one choice-work hard, be original, and be flexible. Nowadays, there are more Dodo Pizzas in Russia than Papa John’s and Domino’s pizzerias combined. In just eight years, in an old and crowded market, without resources, based in a small town in northern Russia, we’ve built a large pizza chain, leaving behind all our international competitors who had been working for 20 years already in this market. Learning our story, business school graduates asked me, “Wait, you could do that?” Our unconventional business attitude is the very thing that allowed our company to achieve everything we have done. You might say, perhaps, that this is not a serious attitude, but then, Dodo Pizza is kind of a not-so-serious company. You might be surprised, perhaps, that a big pizza chain doesn’t have an exact business strategy, and in fact makes use of chance opportunities trying to crack the most complex pizza market. We will certainly return there in the future. But undoubtedly, that was only the first chapter. So that seems to be the end of our California story. But whatever happens, we are going to continue trusting people, because only through trust can we achieve outstanding results. However, every mistake is a step forward. John and Alena shook hands and parted on good terms.īusiness is not only about triumphs, it is also about mistakes and defeats. We had discussed all possible solutions, and Alena made a decision to close the pizzeria. I was coming to California to meet John, but when we did meet, he suggested I buy the pizzeria out or find investors who could do that in my stead. Their attitudes towards marketing were different. It turned out, John was having trouble trusting Alena and giving up everyday operational control. Unfortunately, Alena’s partnership with John was not going so well. Promptly, Alena moved to California, organized ingredient delivery, put together a team, and the pizzeria made a good start. In accordance to their agreement, John’s pizzeria took the Dodo Pizza brand name, Alena became its manager, and John remained the business owner. Alena came to California, and they agreed on a partnership. Currently, our company doesn’t focus on expansion in America, so I declined but recommended him to contact Alena Tikhova, our franchisee and the owner of two Dodo Pizzas in Mississippi and Tennessee. When yet another employee hadn’t come to work, John wrote to me and suggested we buy or manage his pizzeria. By the second month, it occurred to John that pizza delivery was a complicated business, and he didn’t want it after all. He even began to design his own Dodo IS counterpart because he planned to build his own pizza chain in the future. Preparing for the opening, John had found out about our company and got interested. He designed a concept, created a trademark, and invented recipes. He had some spare capital, and a pizzeria was kind of a venture project for him. One day, an American entrepreneur named John decided to open a pizzeria in Torrance, Los Angeles County. The Los Angeles pizzeria was there, and then, in a blink of an eye, it was not. It was the result of our current guerilla tactics in the vast and complex US market. On our map, the Los Angeles pizzeria appeared as a surprise. Our company has been working for eight years now, and in all this time we’ve closed only three pizzerias. Overall, we’ve got more than 450 pizzerias in our chain already. In Los Angeles, Dodo Pizza worked for just three weeks. We have closed our pizzeria in California. The Chicago Manual of Style advises, “A mass noun (sometimes called a noncount noun) is one that denotes something uncountable, either because it is abstract. We understand why some words can grate on our nerves or ears when they differ from what we have learned and used over the years. They work harder when the foreman is around. How do you know that work, not works, is plural? Think about which word you would use with he and which word you would use with they. Their is a clue that staff is not acting as a unit. Our staff work hard to meet their goals and deadlines. Staff, a collective noun, is acting as a single unit in this sentence.ĥ. Our staff meets on Tuesday mornings to discuss customer complaints. The intention here is to indicate that this percentage represents a single group.Ĥ. The subject is twelve percent, which will be either singular or plural depending on the object of the preposition that follows. Therefore, 25% becomes plural in meaning.Įxample: Twelve percent of the building has/have been renovated. We have already said that people is plural. In this case people is the object of the preposition of. Fractions and percentages, like team and staff, can be either singular or plural depending on the object of the preposition following. Why is 25% of people are correct? The subject of this sentence is 25%. It might be better to reword the sentence: Nearly 25% of people in the world are Muslim. That intention gets lost by focusing on one is. Let’s get real here, however: The intention in this headline is to let us know that nearly 25% of the world’s population is Muslim. This means that people is the object of the preposition. In the above sentence, the prepositional phrase is in four people. However, the subject is one, which is singular and takes a singular verb. People is NOT a collective noun like team or staff. Would you choose is or are in the example below?Įxample (an actual headline from CNN.com): Nearly one in four people worldwide is/are Muslim. If the sentence indicates more individuality, use a plural verb.Įxample: The team are eating with their families tonight. If these nouns are acting as a unit, use a singular verb.Įxample: The team is heading for practice this afternoon.
